When to use air-drying varnish

  • You have no oven, or the motor does not fit in one,
  • You run a repair shop with different motors every day,
  • You work in the field without removing the motor,
  • You are rewinding a general-purpose motor running in normal conditions.

For series production or motors in heavy duty, baking varnish OR 3xx gives higher bond strength.

How to apply

  1. Clean the winding; preheat old motors to drive out moisture.
  2. Thin the varnish with T-100, generally 3 parts varnish to 1 part thinner.
  3. Dip, or work it well between the turns with a brush.
  4. Let the excess drain; leave no pools.
  5. Leave to dry in a warm, dry, ventilated place for the time given in the TDS.

Points to watch

  • Use its own thinner: Do not add another thinner such as T-300; drying will suffer.
  • Do not mix with baking varnish: The two types are never combined in one can or dip tank.
  • A cold workshop slows drying: Move the motor to a warm, ventilated place.
  • For harsh conditions: On motors running in humid environments, an insulating top coat can be applied once the varnish is fully dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does air-drying winding varnish take to dry?

Drying time depends on ambient temperature, humidity and film thickness. The product's drying time is given in the TDS; a warm, dry, ventilated place speeds it up.

Which thinner is used?

OR 1xx air-drying varnishes are thinned with T-100, generally 3 parts varnish to 1 part thinner.

Is it as durable as baking varnish?

It gives sufficient durability for general-purpose motors. Maximum bond strength, heat and moisture resistance and resistance to hot transformer oil come from baking varnish.
