Frequently Asked Questions
About winding varnish
What is winding varnish?
Winding varnish is a solvent-based or solventless insulating varnish applied to electric motor and transformer windings after winding, protecting them from electrical and external influences. It penetrates between the turns, bonds the wires together and insulates against moisture and contamination.
Should I choose air-drying or baking varnish?
If you have no oven or do field/repair work, air-drying varnish (OR 1xx series) is practical; it cures at room temperature. For series production and when maximum bond strength, heat and moisture resistance are required, baking varnish (OR 3xx series) is preferred.
Which thermal class varnish should I use?
First determine the operating temperature of the motor and the class of the enameled wire. The varnish class must be at least equal to the winding class: class B 130 °C, class F 155 °C, class H 180 °C.
How is winding varnish applied?
Depending on the product, by dipping, brush or spray gun. The winding must be clean and dry before application and preheated if necessary. For baking products, follow the recommended curing schedule.
Which thinner should be used for winding varnish, and at what ratio?
For general use, add 1 part thinner to 3 parts varnish. Orchem air-drying varnishes are thinned with T-100, OKA-501 varnish with T-501 and baking varnishes with T-300 thinner. The wrong thinner can impair drying and insulation; check the product TDS for the exact ratio.
Can I get a technical data sheet (TDS) and price list?
Yes. Write to us via WhatsApp or e-mail with your requirements and we will send the TDS and current price list for the relevant product.
Do you offer custom formulations?
Yes. We develop custom varnishes according to strip-out type, viscosity, drying time and your application line.
